The impact of Covid-19 on community sport and physical activity have been vast; and unless there is a comprehensive support package for the sector I fear many sports clubs, fitness and leisure facilities will be lost.
This could mean the doors of leisure centres, that are so important to our community, closing never to be opened again. Leisure centres are not only a key pillar of the local economy but supports thousands of people every year in the community to improve their health and wellbeing and tackle many local challenges, such as loneliness, isolation, mental health issues; as well as providing an extremely valuable local asset in our community’s fight to recover from the impacts of Covid-19.
A permanent closure will have catastrophic impacts on the lives of local people living within your constituency.
I am writing to you today because the sector urgently need your support. Please would you write to Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Oliver Dowden MP and Chancellor Rishi Sunak MP urging them to work with the sector on the development of a Sports Recovery Fund that will:
- Create a Sports Recovery Fund to invest into community sport and physical activity
- Extend the VAT reduction that has been applied to the culture and hospitality sectors to the sport and physical activity sector
- Protect access to sport and physical activity during any local lockdowns
This will allow services in our community to retain jobs, keep our facilities open within [insert location] and focus our continued outreach within the community in order for the nation to speed up its recovery from Covid-19.
