Losing weight, giving up smoking and cutting out drinking is hard to do at the best of times, but participants in Selby on the Move It Lose It programme have done just that!
Despite not being able to attend weekly sessions, participants of the Move It Lose It programme have remained motivated, found ways to get in their daily exercise and eat well.
Funded by North Yorkshire County Council to enable participants to access a 12-24-week programme free of charge, Inspiring healthy lifestyles run across the Selby District and had to end face to face sessions in early March. Since then, staff have remained in touch with participants over the phone and via email. Slimming World, a partner of the service, have further supported clients through virtual group sessions conducted via zoom.
Dani Penney, Wellbeing Manager for Inspiring healthy lifestyles, has been conducting welfare calls over the course of lockdown and has listened to participants describing how they have been keeping active over the past few months. Dani said: “We have been able to continue supporting participants remotely and it has been great to hear how well they are doing.
“During one call, a participant named Alan told me that he has quit smoking completely and reduced his drinking significantly whilst on the programme. These are huge achievements of their own, but as a result he has also lost 3.5 stone!”
Participants have joined in with live online exercise classes and taken advantage of the good weather, many enjoying walking and taking up cycling.
James joined the programme to support his wife and start feeling healthier again. He told us: “I have struggled to lose weight have tried various diets in the past. My motivation to lose weight has increased after having my first child and I was fed up of feeling unhealthy.
“I have learned a lot about my nutrition and what works through attending Slimming World groups and have been enjoying the virtual zoom sessions. I was nervous to join the first one as the youngest male but my consultant made me feel welcome straight away.
“I have increased the amount of cycling and walking I have been doing and really enjoying getting back into the cycling aspect. I used to only do it a couple of times a year whereas it is now at least once a week.”
Other participants have seen success over lockdown too. One couple have taken up cycling and walking which has resulted in a 4.5 stone weight loss between the pair. At the start of lockdown the husband suffered a fractured hip and could not exercise for 4 weeks but has managed to maintain his weight loss goals by eating well.
